They’re supposed to keep the peace, catch the bad guys, and make us feel more secure in our environments.

But unfortunately, not all police interactions go according to plan.

There are corrupt police officers, malicious actors and bullies on the team, situations that produce unnecessarily high anxiety, and pieces of confusing information that can lead officers to act in unnecessary ways.

We can see it all around the world.

If you want to protect yourself from unfair police treatment, if you want to maximize your legal options, and if you want to minimize the possibility of being injured or killed, it’s important to know how to properly conduct yourself during police interactions.

The advice in this guide applies to a wide variety of police interactions, such as being pulled over in a routine traffic stop or being questioned by police at your home.

1. Remain Silent

We all know the phrase “you have the right to remain silent,” but a startlingly low number of people actually capitalize on this right.

Remaining silent is arguably the most critical piece of advice to follow in any police interaction.

Why is that the case?

For starters, we can explore the companion phrase, “Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”

If you accidentally admit to committing a crime, if you lie about something, or if you simply contradict yourself, your words can work against you.

Many people have found themselves in prison unnecessarily because they blurted out the wrong thing at the wrong time.

Obviously, you shouldn’t incriminate yourself.

But talking (especially when you are angry) can render you vulnerable in ways that aren’t always predictable.

Without a lawyer guiding you, your best option is simply not talking at all.

2. Be Polite and Comply With Requirements

That said, it is a good idea to remain polite and comply with any legal requirements that apply to you.

Being polite and cooperative with police makes them less likely to retaliate against you and allows the process to move forward smoothly, even a smile and a simple exchange of greetings can dictate a much better interaction.

Plus, depending on where you live, you may be required to take certain actions or provide police officers with specific pieces of information; for example, if you’re pulled over, you may be required to give police officers your name and show them your driver’s license.

Don’t pick a fight unnecessarily.

3. Move Slowly and Deliberately

Police officers cause around 250,000 civilian injuries every year, and more than 600 deaths in the US alone.

Many of these happen because police respond to suspicious or sudden movements.

Regardless of whether those individual instances are justified, it’s a good idea for you to move slowly and deliberately.

It’s even better to announce what you’re about to do before you do it, for example: “I’m going to reach into my glove box to get my registration.”

4. Record Everything

In nearly all areas, you’re allowed to record police interactions so long as you’re not directly interfering with the police officer’s ability to do their job.

That means you can record a video of the entire interaction, starting from the beginning.

If the police officer has a problem with it, ask them how the recording is interfering with their ability to perform their duty and politely insist that it is your right to record this interaction for your own protection.

5. Don’t Consent to Searches

By default, you are not required to consent to any searches of your home or property.

This changes only if the police officer has probable cause to suspect that you have committed a crime or if there is a warrant for the search.

If a police officer asks to search your home, vehicle, or other property, you should politely decline, even if you feel you have nothing to hide.

If the police officer has a warrant, ask to see it before you allow them entry.

6. Pay Attention to How You’re Being Treated

Pay close attention to what police officers do and don’t do during your interactions, especially if you’re not recording.

These sequences of events are very important for expanding your future legal options.

For example, police officers are required to read you your Miranda rights if they take you into custody or are subjected to a custodial interrogation.

If they don’t, this misconduct could allow you to evade whatever charges you faced.

7. Get an Attorney ASAP

If you’re being interrogated or arrested, it’s important to get a lawyer at your side as soon as possible.

Your lawyer can help you understand the charges you face, better understand your legal rights, and give you advice that can help improve your final outcome.

8. Educate Yourself

Finally, commit to educating yourself.

Even reading this article is a huge step.

You should understand the laws and your rights in your area, so you’re adequately prepared for any police interaction in the future.

The advice in this guide is meant to be mostly universal, but it’s still not comprehensive, and there are likely some unique considerations to bear in mind for your area, in particular.

Don’t forget to stay hydrated, water is essential for every bodily function.

2. Move Your Body.

Find activities you enjoy, whether it’s dancing, swimming, hiking, or team sports.

Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise most days of the week.

3. Prioritize Sleep.

When you sleep, your body repairs itself and recharges.

Most adults need 7 to 8 hours of quality sleep nightly.

Establish a regular sleep schedule, create a relaxing bedtime routine, and prioritize a sleep conducive environment.

4. Listen to Your Body.

Your body is constantly communicating with you.

Pay attention to hunger cues, fatigue, and pain signals.

These are messages that shouldn’t be ignored.

Learn to differentiate between healthy cravings and emotional eating.

Rest when your body needs it, and don’t push yourself to exhaustion during exercise.

5. Manage Stress.

Chronic stress can wreak havoc on your physical and mental health.

Find healthy ways to manage stress, such as yoga, meditation, spending time in nature, or spending time with loved ones.

Maintaining good hygiene is a crucial aspect of respecting your body and keeping it healthy.

First of all, how are you and your family doing after these Pandemic times?

For my husband and me, the pandemic period was very fruitful.

During this time, I improved my professional skills, and he also enrolled in university and continues to advance his career.

Many found it very difficult to endure the time away from the streets, restaurants, and entertainment, and it was hard to be at home surrounded by family members, but not us.

We like spending time at home, we enjoy cooking something delicious and then watching movies together.

So, this time turned out not to be so scary.

We were only worried about our relatives and close ones who were sick.

How did the coronavirus pandemic affect your clients? Did it affect you at all?

The pandemic has impacted my clients in the sense that many have suffered from severe illness, some have lost loved ones, and others have developed a fear of leaving their homes or interacting with people due to the risk of infection.

As a result, another spectrum of life issues has emerged that needed to be addressed.

What are the biggest lessons that you learned in this pandemic?

If you’re bored when alone with yourself, if you’re tired of your loved ones, it’s definitely time to change something in your life.

The Origin:

Tell us about you, your career, how you started with your coaching career?

My education began with a deep belief in the power of words.

Initially, I completed journalism courses and wrote articles on various social topics.

Wanting to develop professionally, I entered the University of Printing Arts.

During this time, I also wrote a book and published it.

This book is a collection of stories about real people and their love stories.

I wrote about couples that made an impression on me, where one of the spouses was seriously ill.

My reflections and belief in love became the foundation for this book.

Later, I received many responses from people who found hope through this book.

As interacting with people has always held a very important place in my life, I started studying psychology.

For several years, I conducted various meetings as a motivational speaker in many cities.

I spoke on topics of relationships, faith, love, and suffering to a wide range of audiences.

These included future doctors, students, high school seniors, parents of children with disabilities, and teachers.

Each meeting led to new acquaintances and new communications.

All this formed the basis of my subsequent education.

I became a life coach.

In this profession, my skills in writing and speaking, my deep faith in the power of words, and my years of experience interacting with people and audiences are deeply involved.

Long before I became a certified life coach, I noticed that it was very easy for me to inspire someone, see their uniqueness and individuality, and help them see it for themselves.

In this way, some people found their profession, while others entered into the relationships they had dreamed of.

Many have told me that they feel different around me, they come alive in spirit.

I’m glad that I can now use my ability professionally.

What was your biggest obstacle that you had to overcome in your life that made you who you are today?

When I was three years old, I was diagnosed with an incurable disease that, according to doctors, should have stopped my lifespan at five years old.

Nobody told me I would be happy, and it was very difficult to believe in my happiness when nobody even believed I had a future.

But now I am happily married and have many wonderful friends.

I have been on three continents, seen a few oceans, and visited many countries.

The biggest obstacle is when you encounter disbelief.

Disbelief in your ability to succeed, in your worthiness, in your future, and in your potential for happiness.

I have found a unique remedy for this.

I am eager to share it with my clients.

If none of the problems I had to face stopped me on the path to happiness and the opportunity to live a fulfilled life, then I can help those who are looking for fulfillment in their life and who strive to achieve big goals.

How do you innovate with coaching your clients?

Every client is like a separate universe, which is why the approach and coaching will change each time depending on the specific person and the specific situation.

There are no two people alike or any two lives that are the same.

Even the way we develop in utero happens differently each time, despite some similarities in the process.

Each of us has our own individual path, our own unique story.

My task as a coach is to help the client see this path, recognize their uniqueness, uncover their strengths, and unlock their potential.

What’s unique about your coaching approach?

I help people reconnect with their minds and bodies to discover a fulfilled life and achieve their wildest dreams.

First and foremost, I help to uncover the genius with which a person was born into this world, and which, as a rule, over time, a person loses under the ruins of imposed stereotypes of desires, opinions, and feelings.

I help return to one’s true essence, to understand “who I am” and “what I really want”.

Often, we start with simple desires and feelings, with the development of the simple skill of understanding oneself, with the perception of one’s body.

The image of a person’s body is another profound and very important topic and sphere of a person’s life.

How I perceive myself in my body, how comfortable I am, how much I like myself, how well I understand my desires… reveals much deeper levels of personality.

If something is wrong with the perception of one’s body, if a person dislikes how they look, feels insecure among people, and does not always understand their desires, then moving with this to something greater, success in personal life, business prosperity, and so on, makes no sense.

It’s necessary to deal with this visible, tangible sphere in order to have the opportunity to move towards something more concealed or spiritual.

I believe I won’t be mistaken if I say that after our sessions, a person will never be the same, something will change forever, and this something is for the better.

The most fundamental and most valuable thing I want for each client to find in our sessions is a greater understanding of themselves.

If they experience this meeting with their authentic self or simply learn something more about themselves, that is the main value of our sessions.

I have used a wide variety of techniques, tailored to the individuality of the person and their personal request.

How did the coronavirus pandemic affect your clients? Did it affect you at all?

At the time of the pandemic I had not yet started my coaching business.

What I learned is that the pandemic opened the world up to all of us.

The world suffered from the same virus uniting us in a way.

It showed us we can work from home and be productive.

It allowed us to come up with new ways to meet our needs.

Prior to the coronavirus I had been through many things.

By that time little to nothing surprised me.

I did not have the psychological impact many others did.

I do wish I had started my coaching business prior to the pandemic, so I could have helped people deal with the emotional impact and assisted them to refocus the time as an opportunity to reset and rediscover themselves.

Enabling them to live their dream lives once the pandemic was over.

What are the biggest lessons that you learned in this pandemic?

I learned regardless of how confident and self assured we may be, there are times when we all feel things are out of control.

The important thing to remember is, allow yourself to be human, take a short time to feel emotions and deal with the adversity.

Then focus on the positive and move forward.

Focus is everything.

When we allow ourselves to stay in the negative aspects of an adversity too long, that is when we get and stay stuck.

Tell us about you, your career, how you started with your coaching career?

I have over three decades experience in the medical field as a registered nurse.

In addition I am a Certified Practitioner of NLP, Author, Public Speaker, Dream Life Transformation Coach, Founder of Just Brooke, LLC.

My life started with adversity that continued for many years.

I was born to teenage parents.

They divorced when I was two.

My dad who raised me adopted me after my brother was born.

When I was three my brother was born with a congenital heart defect.

He was in the ICU for the first month of his life.

I would sit in the ICU waiting room by myself playing with my bracelets because I was certain they made me invisible, so no one would get me.

I was date raped in high school.

My first husband cheated on me and got someone else pregnant.

While my brother was in the hospital and subsequently died after his heart transplant.

My second husband was a con artist who threatened to kill us.

I have Hasimoto’s Disease which took years to be diagnosed.

I had a pituitary tumor which healed immaculately.

I had fertility problems.

I raised my son as a single mom.

I got through all these situations.

Then the emotional impact of all these situations hit me at once.

I was stuck, bitter, scared, sad, and nervous.

While I was very confident at work and being a single mom.

I did not know how to get unstuck, reset, and rediscover myself.

I had this beautiful life I dreamed of, but did not know how to get there.

I had NLP done on me.

Became certified in NLP.

Developed tools where I thought NLP was missing.

Went to work “fixing” myself.

In my NLP class I worked with Fidel often.

He said, “there is a side of you that is so confident. Anything you set your mind to, you do. When you tell someone you are going to do something for them, you do it. You start businesses. Nothing stops you.

Instead of naming all those adjectives let’s give that part of you a name.”

I said “Brooke”.

He asked does Brooke have a first name or a last name.

I said nope, Just Brooke.

After my brother’s death I heard “Help people like you.”

I thought it was working with transplant patients somehow. So I called the transplant department in Houston.

The sweet lady who answered said my heart was in the right place, but I would not be a good fit. It would be too hard and emotional on me because of my loss with my brother.

Years later when I was divorcing the con artist. I heard “Help people like you”.

As I looked around at my surroundings, I said “God I do not know if you know this but I can’t even take care of myself. I have nothing to offer others.”

I heard it again “Help people like you” and saw myself standing on stage speaking to an auditorium full of people.

I said “okay God when things are better in my life. I will help people like me.”

Thanksgiving 2022 on my way home from my traveling RN job, I was pondering those times.

That is when I had my aha moment and realized it was my life I needed to open up about.

My life experience and overcoming those adversities with my first hand knowledge is how I am supposed to help people.

I went to work and Just Brooke, LLC was born.

I named my company Just Brooke, because there is enough self love and self confidence in me for my clients to tap into until they remember those traits in themselves.

What was your biggest obstacle that you had to overcome in your life that made you who you are today?

I have overcome many huge obstacles in life.

The biggest obstacle I have overcome is allowing myself to be human and feel and deal with emotions at the time they occur, and moving forward.

This prevents many adverse situations from bottling up, causing me to get stuck and allows me to continue living my dream.

We are still recovering from the economical impact of the pandemic.

We are grateful we are still getting through it all.

How did the coronavirus pandemic affect your clients? Did it affect you at all?

Depression, anxiety.

A lot of my potential clients and people I have coached before, started experiencing depression and anxiety amid the pandemic.

It affected me financially and mentally too.

What are the biggest lessons that you learned in this pandemic?

Life is short and unpredictable.

People are unsafe: careers, relationships, health.

Stagnation: people are stuck with choices and things that no longer serve them, they are afraid to explore what’s in store for them.

Anxiety and depression are real.

Life Coaching has been my passion, and for a long time.

I used to coach people in my circle since I was in High School.

Contrary to this, my mother used to call me “therapist “ when I was younger.

Since 2022, I have been working on myself.

And I decided to do things I am really passionate about, things that make an impact, that’s when I started persuing personal development coaching, Resilience and Growth mindset to be specific.

Being present and non judgemental.
