Dan Newby is one of the coaches that we found this month and we did a little interview with him. He impressed us with his understanding of emotions.

He started coaching back in 1999 and he is thankful for stumbling upon that path to this day. But his journey of investigating the secrets of emotions began when he was in a dark period of his life.

He was struggling with a couple of difficult emotions in his 30s and 40s but he was unable to recognize the exact emotions he was feeling at that moment. That led him to start investigating what they are, what they mean, and what they want to tell us.

His approach is emotions-centered and he helps his clients understand the real message behind each emotion. Here is what he said.

First of all, how are you and your family doing in these Pandemic times?

Well, thank you.

How does the coronavirus pandemic affect your clients? Did it affect you at all?

I live in Spain, and when it became clear what was happening in Italy and that travel was going to be impossible as before, I shifted my courses to an online format.

I had done coaching for years by telephone or video call, so it was not such a big change for me.

I’ve found that it is still possible to create intimacy and connection virtually if one sets the context for them.

I would say there are advantages and disadvantages, but I wouldn’t consider the learning or coaching inferior to in-person experiences,

What are the biggest lessons that you learned in this pandemic?

The power uncertainty plays for many people.

At the beginning of the pandemic, I was working with a school system in the U.S.

We set up small group conversations to explore their emotions and how they might understand and leverage them.

Of course, fear and anxiety showed up but what surprised me was the frequency with which people said they were suffering or struggling due to uncertainty.

I realized that in the pre-coronavirus times when we felt uncertainty there was generally someone we could turn to who could reassure us or give a sense of grounding or certainty, a colleague, a boss, a friend, someone.

When coronavirus came along no one knew what to do.

There was no one we could turn to.

For many people this created enormous confusion, fear, guilt, or doubt.

I hadn’t realized the power uncertainty can have in our lives.

The Origin:

Tell us about you, your career, how you started with your coaching career?

I entered a coaching program in 1999 with the intention of strengthening my leadership skills but did not intend to pursue a career in coaching.

During the course and in the following year I realized that, although I enjoyed my leadership position, the part I enjoyed most was creating opportunities for others to grow and discover what they loved.

That led to me focus on coaching and stepping out of the organization to work independently.

It has been a lovely journey, full of twists and turns, and many moments of satisfaction.

I’m grateful I stumbled onto this path.

What was your biggest obstacle that you had to overcome in your life that made you who you are today?

In a word, my emotions.

In my late 30s and early 40s I lived some very dark years.

I was driven by emotions I did not understand or know how to handle.

I struggled to understand why life seemed so difficult and if it was possible to suffer less.

The emotion I was experiencing at that moment, I now understand as desperation.

Bit by bit I began to understand that what I was missing was emotional understanding or literacy.

I knew I had emotions but did not know how to distinguish them or how to navigate them.

That put me on the path I am still following today.

The Coaching Style:

How do you innovate with coaching your clients?

I was trained as an ontological coach and later led courses for six years.

Initially, I was taken by the power of addressing language, emotions, and somatics as a way of coaching.

It opened possibilities I had not imagined previously.

About ten years ago I moved deliberately to work with emotions whether in coaching, training, or writing.

My work now is based on the idea that every belief or choice we make is rooted in one or more emotions.

They are the core energy that either moves us forward or holds us back.

My work now is focused entirely on helping clients and coaches build their emotional range, understanding, and literacy.

What’s unique about your coaching approach?

The focus I put on my clients’ emotions.

We begin with a conversation or story, of course, but quickly move into the emotions that are generating their challenge.

The model I developed for this is called Emotions-Centered Coaching and I find it to be an extremely effective way of getting to the root of the client’s dissatisfaction and of shaping solutions with them. 

What benefits do your clients get after working with you?

Emotions-Centered Coaching does two things at once:

1. It helps my clients understand their challenges differently but also helps them expand their vocabulary and understanding of emotions.

For instance, they learn to distinguish anger from other closely related emotions such as irritation, annoyance, frustration, or aggravation.

2. They also learn to reframe the meaning of certain emotions.

For instance, I would say that guilt does not mean “I did something wrong”.

My interpretation is that it means “I did something that was out of alignment with my values”. In other words, I did something that was wrong ‘to me’.

That often helps a coachee understand there is a gap between their values and behaviours that their guilt is pointing to the solution which is either to reconsider their values or change their behaviour.

Do you use any specific tools to be efficient with your clients?

I mentioned the Emotions-Centered Coaching model and also have four books on emotions and emotional literacy, as well as a set of emotions flashcards (Emoli) and an iPhone app (Emote: Master Your Emotions).

In addition, I teach courses on Emotions-Centered Coaching, Emotional Mastery, and Moving Beyond Imposter Syndrome.

The Impact:

If you had a super megaphone that, when you speak into, the whole world will hear your message, what would you say?

“Emotional literacy will make your life and the life of those around you immeasureably better!”

What is the greatest lesson you have learned in your life?

The power of dignity.

The root of the word dignity is Latin and means “worth”.

When we feel the emotion of dignity it means we know, without doubt, that we are of value.

Many people are plagued by doubt about their worth as human beings.

I experienced this for many years as well and the learning that helped me move out of self-doubt was strengthening dignity.

Your final thoughts?

As a result of the way we understand learning, most of us have focused on developing our intellect and the tools that support it such as linguistic literacy.

That is a wonderful thing, but in the process, we’ve overlooked the importance of emotions.

Turning your attention to learning about emotions as a life skill and tool will change your life for the better.

Emotions are at the root of every choice we make and every relationship we have whether with our dog, our boss, or the world around us.

Nothing you can learn intellectually replaces emotional learning and they are a dynamic pair when working together.

1. Include More Proteins and Less Carbohydrates in Your Breakfast.

Most people understand how important breakfast is and why skipping it is a bad idea.

However, most people do not know that their breakfast composition might make them feel tired or hungry earlier.

Carbohydrates in the morning cause your blood glucose and dopamine levels to spike because you are coming out of a catabolic state where your body is highly stressed.

However, these spikes in blood sugar and dopamine levels do not last very long, leading to the crash many people experience in the mid morning.

Including more proteins and fats in your breakfast is recommended because both are excellent energy sources, make you feel fuller for longer, and are metabolized slowly.

Hence, you have a lot of energy throughout the day.

2. Know How Your Body Reacts To Different Foods and Physical Activities.

Glucose is the body’s primary energy source, which means how much glucose you have in your body will determine how energized you feel.

Different types of food can cause your glucose levels to spike so you feel energized but lead to crashes sooner because they are unsustainable energy sources.

The same goes for physical activities that can energize you but use up so much energy that you feel lethargic.

Feeling like this is not limited to strenuous exercises, as simple exercises like walking can deplete your blood glucose, too.

Keep tabs on your glucose levels so you know what to eat or do to ensure the right blood glucose levels throughout the day.

Caffeine can make you feel more energized, which is why many people drink coffee or drinks with caffeine in the morning and afternoon.

Drinking them in the afternoon will energize you through the afternoon and evening, but this also typically extends into the night.

People who drink over 300 mg of caffeine in the afternoon can have difficulty falling asleep.

Even when they fall asleep, they often cannot get the quality of sleep that would leave them well rested and refreshed for the following day.

When they do not sleep well, they take coffee in the morning to start their day, crash in the afternoon, drink more coffee, and the cycle repeats.

If you love coffee, avoid it in the afternoon, especially after 3 PM.

You will get much better sleep and feel more energized the following day, and you might not even need as much coffee to get your day going.

4. Drink More Water and Less Alcohol.

Dehydration can make you feel tired and lethargic, especially if you exercise in the morning, work in a hot environment, and do not drink enough water.

The solution is drinking enough water, typically eight glasses daily for adults.

Another reason for dehydration is alcohol consumption.

Alcohol is a diuretic, meaning it promotes the excretion of water through urination, which can leave you dehydrated.

Also, alcohol interferes with deep sleep.

This means that even if you sleep for eight hours after taking alcohol in the evening, you will not be well rested and, therefore, feel lethargic and sleepy the following day.

It is common to feel like you do not have any energy left in the evening, but it should not be that way.

First of all, how are you and your family doing in these Pandemic times?

The Pandemic was a challenge for everyone.

I have watched my children stare at the screen during virtual classes and the days grew long and lonely.

My then seven year old could not sleep at night, his mind racing with anxiety.

Like all other children in our state, my children did all their learning online.

And there were days when we all struggled to find the inner peace and human interaction, we so badly craved.

We tried to mitigate the effect of isolation through family playtime, stories, and cooking together.

We even avoided watching the news of the alarming infection and hospitalization rates.

I am grateful we are doing better now that the lockdowns have been lifted.

It has been two years since pandemic hit, my children joined a local community program where they get to learn, meet and interact with other children.

Two weeks into the program and the transformation was evident.

Immersion into a sentient community strengthened their sense of belonging and mattering, while the shared experiences helped them find grounding and cultivate growth.

From the human development perspective, it became clear that delivering the same educational material in a one on one virtual learning environment would not have had the same impact.

How does the coronavirus pandemic affect your clients? Did it affect you at all?

I witnessed the effect of the isolation pandemic during the pandemic quarantine.

Remote learning, lockdowns, and tragic news of record level cases were taxing on people’s mental and emotional well being.

My biggest impact was missing my parents and siblings, who live in the UK.

What are the biggest lessons that you learned in this pandemic?

I learned to be grateful for everything that we have.

To cherish our loved ones and be fully present to enjoy every moment of every day.

I also learned the importance of human interaction connection on our mental, emotional, and spiritual well being.

I experienced first hand the feeling that comes with the shared experience as a source for love, enrichment, and growth.

Tell us about you, your career, how you started with your coaching career?

Let me introduce myself.

I am just a young lady, an adventurer, a wayfarer crossing continents and cultures, only to discover the truth that unites us all is our interconnection with each other and the universe. 

My story is one of these intense transitions.

I was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and spent the first half of my childhood in Tripoli, North Africa, and the second half in Dublin, Ireland.

You do not have to be a cross cultural specialist to imagine that it is like living between worlds.

I am a certified leadership coach credentialed by the International Coaching Federation.

In addition, I am an organizational leadership specialist, a certified emotional resilience mentor, and an author.

My goal is to transform the conception of leadership into one of inner peace, wisdom, and creation based thinking.

Likewise, I empower ambitious executives, professionals, and change leaders to go from existing to living.

My mission is to empower leaders to lead from their souls through conscious awareness via coaching and mentoring.

I want to tell you a story.

My story, When I was twenty, I experienced a devastating encounter with the ‘glass ceiling.’

It was gut wrenching.

The term ‘glass ceiling’ is used in leadership literature to describe the intangible barrier to professional advancement that prevents women and minorities from obtaining upper level positions.

You see, the ‘glass ceiling’ for me was double glazed.

People labeled me as female and an ethnic minority.

I was shocked and confused and then realized I had to let go of the labels to uncover the leader within.

It was not easy, but I decided to return to school and specialize in organizational leadership.

In my dissertation, I researched the opportunities and challenges facing minority female leaders.

I also completed an emotional resilience training program to become a certified emotional resilience coach and mentor.

From this I learned that limitation is an illusion.

I wanted to master the art and science of evoking awareness to awaken people to the realization of their latent potential.

Hence, I completed my professional coach training and credentialing with the International Coaching Federation.

Now I am able to enjoy helping people master the art of leading from a state of clarity and peace.

What was your biggest obstacle that you had to overcome in your life that made you who you are today?

See, when I was in my early twenties, I hit rock bottom.

My health crashed to the point where I was unable to walk.

My life as I knew it was over.

Who I thought I was, I was not anymore.

Do you know what that is like?

I felt like I was drowning in my own sense of despair as I bore the brunt of a full blown burnout.

And was never the same, but then I found my mentor, guide, and coach.

Who reminded me never to take life too seriously.

I was inspired to reawaken my innate well being.

See when you are ready to rise to the occasion and embrace the leader within.

You will have to welcome your guide into your life with an open mind and heart and do whatever it takes to reclaim you!

Because the moral of the story is that you are your greatest asset, acknowledge that asset, develop it, and be grateful for it.

How do you innovate with coaching your clients?

I use the inner peace technique, engage in deep breathing and role play.

I try to stay in tune with my client’s energy and focus on helping them cultivate a good feeling.

What’s unique about your coaching approach?

 My coaching focuses on the following:

1. A Holistic approach acknowledges that we know that we are not two separate individuals at home and work.

It empowers us to share our passions and interests in all aspects of our lives. 

2. From the Inside Out. Most approaches to resilience aim to instill resilience from the outside using techniques such as positive affirmations, positive behavioral support, and mindfulness based interventions.

While beneficial, they seem to fall short of recognizing our built in resilience system.

The nature of experience based understanding affirms our innate resilience, the essence of a balanced healthy state of mind.

3. It is based on the understanding that human beings are creative, resourceful, and whole.

No one is broken, and there is nothing to be fixed.

You are whole. You always have been and always will be you just can’t see it sometimes.

And my job is to help you see it.

And once you see it, you cannot unsee it.

Hence, a mindset shift is initiated by assisting individuals in transforming their relationship with their thinking.

The greatest lesson I learned in life is to have a mentor, a coach, and a guide.

The reason is that you need a guide to help you map out your path toward achieving your dreams and help you co create whatever you want to create in life.

The reason is that no one can climb Mount Everest alone.

Every climber needs a Sherpa.

Therefore, leadership must have a guide.

Happiness is your default setting.

Never look outside yourself for happiness because happiness lies within.

The only thing worse than death is a life of unrealized potential.

Recognize the Symptoms of Depression!

It’s important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of depression so that you can recognize them in your loved one.

Common symptoms of depression include feelings of sadness or hopelessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating and making decisions, changes in appetite and sleep patterns, feeling worthless or guilty, difficulty connecting with others, and thoughts of suicide or self harm.

Recognizing these symptoms in your loved one will help you understand what they are going through and let them know that you care about their wellbeing.

Understand Treatment Options:

Depression is an illness that can be managed with proper treatment and support from family and friends.

Some common treatments for depression include psychotherapy (talk therapy), antidepressant medications, lifestyle changes (such as getting regular exercise), light therapy (exposure to artificial light), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and alternative treatments such as yoga or meditation.

The Negative Consequences of Not Treating Depression:

Matt Sturgess is one of the coaches that we found this month and we did a little interview with him. He impressed us with his innovation and creativity.

He was exploring his business career path through many industries following his curiosity, from Electronics Engineer to Sales and then leading businesses. Eventually he stumbled upon coaching.

He had a coaching session and fell in love with coaching. He loved the fact that he could talk about business issues with someone independent. Then, he became a coach himself.

For the past 10 years he was researching the mind, trying to find all the knowledge he could in order to create a mind “user guide”. Here is what he said.

First of all, how are you and your family doing in these Pandemic times?

It has been an interesting time, we used the various lockdowns to really enjoy nature. We took the view of accepting it was happening and we had no control over it, so we looked to see how we could make the best of it.

Before the pandemic my wife had a years draining treatment for cancer, during 6 months of Chemotherapy we were already used to constantly using sanitising gel.

Income security was a concern, but when the UK government announced Furlough payments that gave some reassurance.

I think the complete forced change in routine and thinking has left a big mark with lots of people, often a positive one.

Many people reconnecting with nature, family and what really matters, more than they had for a long time.

I used some of the time to write books, the first of which I finally published on Dec 23rd, my book is called “Nuclear Powered Resilience” which shares a simple technique to help people develop a deep level of resilience using conditional love and the fact that the unconscious mind behaves the same way to real or imagined events.

This technique can also help people overcome trauma’s without the need to “examine” the trauma in any way. Very powerful, I will share more later.

How does the coronavirus pandemic affect your clients? Did it affect you at all?

It has created more need for support and greater awareness of the importance of mental wellbeing.

It has also helped people be more open to ideas they may have rejected in the past.

People are more conscious of striving for happiness now, which is something my techniques help people achieve at a core level.

What are the biggest lessons that you learned in this pandemic?

I was already fortunate enough to really value my immediate family and I had a healthy relationship with nature.

The pandemic taught me how important it is for our wellbeing to be regularly out in nature, it’s a key part of being human.

My wife did not always enjoy nature as much as me, know she really understands the benefits of a walk and talk, especially with a flask of hot coffee to accompany us.

The Origin:

Tell us about you, your career, how you started with your coaching career?

I started life as an Electronics Engineer completing a sponsored degree.

In my first job I designed the first surround sound loudspeakers.

I got into sales in different international roles.

I always like to test and challenge myself, so I have had a career in lots of different industries. This way I got lots of learning and personal growth.

I am curious my nature, this curiosity led me to learn as much about business as possible.

I read lots of books, did a Marketing Diploma and then a Warwick University MBA, whilst holding my first role as a director.

When I became a Managing Director I joined a learning group to develop business leaders.

There I enjoyed learning from other MD’s and CEO’s, other business experts and received coaching for the first time.

I really valued being able to talk through business issues with someone independent.

I then became a business coach myself, helping other business leaders.

For the last 10 years I have been reading about how the mind works on many levels.

My intention was to create a “user guide” for the most powerful piece of kit we have, our minds and the brain.

Our minds are capable of achieving incredible things or take us to dark places.

Without a “user guide” we have to work out for ourselves how best to use our minds.

I have developed lots of really simple useful techniques to help people manage their thoughts and emotions.

I train and coach people and enjoy speaking on many topics about the mind.

One of my speaking sessions is called: “What they should have taught you at school and did not about how the mind works and how to get the best out of it.”

What was your biggest obstacle that you had to overcome in your life that made you who you are today?

I have had to overcome many different challenges in life, but I never viewed any of these as obstacles but events that just had to be tackled with a strong sense of needing to always move forwards.

The biggest challenge I had was losing my mum to cancer within 1 week of being diagnosed for the 2nd time, when I was 17.

I was studying at the time, just under halfway through my 2 year course.

I was told other people in my circumstances often got poor exam results.

I was determined this would not be true and got an B in my Electronics A level.

I think my biggest obstacle, especially when younger, was a fear of failure which sometimes held me back from trying out different experiences and being a big worrier.

Something I learnt to manage, but now I have a good understanding of the mind I find this really easy now. I wish I had this knowledge much earlier in life.

The Coaching Style:

How do you innovate with coaching your clients?

Although I have a valuable business background, which really helps me relate to others, my focus is on helping people manage their thoughts and emotions so they are more productive, happier, more resilient and creative.

I am a great fan of thinking differently and helping my clients get new insights and what I call the “aha” moments, when something really clicks and they make a breakthrough.

Everything we ever did or will do started with a thought, so knowing how to better manage our thoughts is a core skill.

One of my innovations is to share really simple techniques to help people make the new learning I give them a habit.

This way they keep getting the benefit long after any coaching, training or speaker sessions with me.

95% of what we do in life is a habit, so its important to teach people how to implement their learning with new habits.

I call my framework ACE:

Awareness of how the mind works and new techniques.
Choices of how they can respond to situations in new ways in the future.
Embedding new habits so that they get a permanent benefit from what they learn.

Probably the biggest innovation I have is a technique where I share the power of Unconditional Love to help people build an incredible level of resilience and overcome past traumas.

I am not aware anyone else has been able to do this as I have.

What’s unique about your coaching approach?

To be honest there are a few things that come to mind!

1. Having had a varied business career, I can easily relate to the person and the business challenges they are facing.

2. I have a big tool kit of support techniques that I can suggest to help my coachees both from a business perspective and helping them manage their thoughts and emotions to become more productive, happier and more resilient.

3. Many of my mind management techniques come with a simple habit element, to make it easy to embed into everyday life, so my coachees get a permanent benefit not just a one off boost.

Some of my techniques are unique and all very simple and practical to use.

What benefits do your clients get after working with you?

The biggest benefits are that they become:

1. More productive, able to focus thinking and have clarity of thoughts.

2. Happier.

3. More resilient in a way that gets stronger over time.

4. More able to understand and manage troubling, distracting thoughts.

5. Increased self confidence.

6. More aware of what has caused them mental pain in the past and how to manage this going forwards.

Do you use any specific tools to be efficient with your clients?

I keep an eye on various bits of technology that helps me reduce my time spent on administrative, so I can spend more time with clients.

The tools I use keep changing as people bring out new apps and website based tools.

The Impact:

If you had a super megaphone that, when you speak into, the whole world will hear your message, what would you say?

Unconditional Love is the cure all for most, if not all mental anguish.

If I could bestow Unconditional Love on the world I would.

My book “Life Transforming Nuclear Powered Resilience” is all about my technique to help anyone have Unconditional Love in their life, regardless of their history up until now.

Also developed a training course to accompany the book.

We all have a deep biological need to be loved and belong to something, it’s a big part of the older parts of our brains (evolutionary speaking).

In Feb 2020 during the pandemic, a friend of mine asked for help sharing with me they had a childhood trauma that had affected them all their life and occasionally mentally took them to a dark place every few years.

During a 2 hours walk in the snow, I shared my Unconditional Love technique with them.

The next day they were in their words “transformed” like a huge heavy weight had been lifted.

They said to me “you saved me”, “you have to share this technique with others”.

My friend had spent a lot of time and money with lots of therapists over 60 years, with no real benefit.

All the techniques they had tried before required analysing their trauma, my technique does not require to talk about of discuss the trauma in any way. It’s a game changer.

What is the greatest lesson you have learned in your life?

The biggy for me was recognising most mental suffering starts with a thought and that we can control our thoughts.

I previously assumed thoughts just come and go and there is not a lot we can do about them.

I then started to realise, that too often its our thoughts that then develop into bigger “stories” in our minds.

Those stories bring discomfort, fear, worry and anxiety.

But when I started to learn how to manage and control those thoughts, using really simple but effective techniques, this was a game changer for me that I simply had to share with others.

Your final thoughts?

Everything we ever did or will do started with a thought.

Having the skill to manage our thoughts so that more of them are positive, nurturing and move us towards what makes us feel happy and fulfilled is so important.

An important skill to have.

Our thoughts turn to emotions, so managing our thoughts also helps us feel better, more often.

95% of what we do is habitual.

Once we learn how to change our thought habits, we start to automatically get the benefits we choose to have.

We in turn feel and are more in control, which is a wonderful place to be.

That’s what I help people achieve with very simple, practical techniques.
