Harvard MRI Study Shows That Meditation Literally Rebuilds Your Brain’s Gray Matter In 8 Weeks

A study conducted by a Harvard affiliated team out of Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) came across surprising conclusions regarding the tangible effects of meditation on human brain structure. An 8 week program of mindfulness meditation produced MRI scans for the first time showing clear evidence that meditation produces “massive changes” in brain gray matter.

Study senior author Sara Lazar of the MGH Psychiatric Neuroimaging Research Program (as well as a Harvard Medical School instructor in psychology) stated that meditation practitioners aren’t just feeling better. They are literally undergoing changes in brain structure that create the associated sustained boosts in positive and relaxed feelings.

Fellow MGH researcher Sue McGreevey notes that previous studies by Lazar’s group found structural differences in the brains of meditation practitioners compared to those with no prior experience most notably in the thickening of the cerebral cortex; the area responsible for attention and emotional integration. These prior studies, however could not narrow down the structural differences to meditation specifically until now.

This most recent study found that an average of 27 minutes of a daily practice of mindfulness exercises stimulated a significant boost in gray matter density, specifically in the hippocampus; the area of the brain in which self-awareness, compassion, and introspection are associated. Furthermore, this boost of gray matter density in the hippocampus was also directly correlational to a decreased gray matter density in the amygdala; an area of the brain known to be instrumental in regulating anxiety and stress responses. In stark contrast, the control group did not have any changes occur in either region of the brain thus ruling out merely the passage of time as a factor of influence regarding the drastic change in gray matter density fluctuations.

MGH fellow out of Glessen University in Germany, Britta Hölzel, states that neuroscientists are finding far more plasticity in brain structure than anticipated and that most importantly we are now aware from a scientific point of view that we can play a very active role in altering our brain structure to improve our overall well-being and quality of life.

Antarctica Is Gaining Ice, Not Losing It. So What Does that Mean for Global Warming?

Good news. A recent study by NASA shows data from the Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICES) indicates that there have been “mass gains from snow accumulation” that “exceeded discharge losses” from the thinning glaciers.

For a long time, researchers attributed the cause of rising sea levels to melting land-based ice and thermal expansion. However, this study puts the former under scrutiny on at least one major continent: Antarctica.

Antarctica constantly loses ice on its Western side while gaining on its Eastern side. Until now, scientists thought that the loss is greater than the gain.

However, new studies show that gaining of ice on the Eastern side outpaces the loss on its Western side.

This news also adds some confusion. Researchers have noted a rise in the world’s sea levels since the 20th century–1,01 to 2.5mm per year.  Out of this total sea level rise Antarctica’s melting ice sheets contributed around 0.27 millimeters per year.

“The good news is that Antarctica is not currently contributing to sea level rise, but is taking 0.23 millimeters per year away. But this is also bad news,” Zwally said. “If the 0.27 millimeters per year of sea level rise attributed to Antarctica in the IPCC report is not really coming from Antarctica, there must be some other contribution to sea level rise that is not accounted for.”

This doesn’t mean that climate change isn’t real, it just means that there are some other factors in play that we have yet to discover. However, living friendly with Nature is always the best decision we can all make, it does no harm to anything or anyone.

REVEALED: First MRI Scans Showing How LSD Affects Our Brain and NeuroScientists are FREAKING OUT!

Researchers from Imperial College London, working with the Beckley Foundation, have for the first time visualized the effects of LSD on the brain.

Dr Robin Carhart-Harris, from the Department of Medicine at Imperial, who led the research, explained: “We observed brain changes under LSD that suggested our volunteers were ‘seeing with their eyes shut’ – albeit they were seeing things from their imagination rather than from the outside world.  We saw that many more areas of the brain than normal were contributing to visual processing under LSD – even though the volunteers’ eyes were closed. Furthermore, the size of this effect correlated with volunteers’ ratings of complex, dreamlike visions.”

But what scientists are most hyped about is what all participants reported: a fundamental change in the quality of their consciousness under LSD.

Dr Carhart-Harris explained: “Normally our brain consists of independent networks that perform separate specialized functions, such as vision, movement and hearing – as well as more complex things like attention. However, under LSD the separateness of these networks breaks down and instead you see a more integrated or unified brain.”

This means that you become more YOU. The areas of your brain that you neglected while “growing up” and trying to fit into the mold are reactivated. Your brain is unrestricted, it functions with its full potential and the limits of what you think as yourself are stretched giving you a broader specter of your true self.

This experience is sometimes framed in a religious or spiritual way – and seems to be associated with improvements in well-being after the drug’s effects have subsided.”

This Woman Took Before And After Photos To Show Just How Real Anxiety Attacks Are!

Anxiety and Panic attacks are not usually considered as an illness. And most of the mental health problems are taken less seriously than other illnesses. Of course, this is not the battle of what illness is the most serious, but for people struggling with these kind of problems it’s incredibly frustrating when others look at them as kids whining about something they can deal with alone.

People struggling with these type of mental illnesses are normal people. They look normal, act normal, but inside they struggle. Inside, they are incredibly fragile and all of their energy they spend holding the “ropes” so they don’t crumble. And all they need is a little support from the world, that’s all they need. And you have no idea what it means a helping hand in these cases, how powerful it is.

This girl took a photo of herself before having a panic attack. She wanted to upload the image on Facebook but minutes later, she had a panic attack. So, she took a photo of herself courageously immediately after the panic attack and bravely uploaded both as before and after images to show the world that the struggle with anxiety and panic attacks is real.

“I’m so sick of the fact that it’s 2016 and there is still so much stigma around mental health. It disgusts me that so many people are so uneducated and judgemental over the topic. They say that 1 in 3 people will suffer with a mental illness at some point in their life. 1 in 3! Do you know how many people that equates to worldwide?! And yet I’ve been battling with anxiety and depression for years and years and there’s still people that make comments like ‘you’ll get over it’, ‘you don’t need tablets, just be happier’, ‘you’re too young to suffer with that’

FUCK YOU. Fuck all of you small minded people that think that because I physically look ‘fine’ that I’m not battling a monster inside my head every single day.

Someone actually said this to me one day ‘aren’t you too young to be suffering with anxiety and depression? What do you actually have to be depressed about at your age?’ Wow, just wow.

I’m a strong person, I’ve been through my fair share of crap in life (the same as anyone else) and I will be okay. I have the best family and friends around me and I am thankful everyday that they have the patience to help and support me.

To anyone who is going through the same, please do not suffer in silence. There is so much support around – Don’t be scared to ask for help.

This is why I can’t stress enough that it costs nothing to be nice to others. Don’t bully others, don’t put others down and the hardest one of them all (as we have all done it at some point) don’t judge another person. We’re all human regardless of age, race, religion, wealth, job. So build one another up instead of breaking each other down.

I know what it means to have panic attacks. You feel like you are squeezing yourself inside yourself to a point where you’ll simply disappear. Your hands spasm, your blood flow shortens, you get all pale and shaking, and you feel like you’re having a heart attack. And this is not even the hardest part. The hardest part is getting out in the world again and spending every quanta of your energy not to have another panic attack, organizing every single thought in your mind.

But this too is curable and the secret of overcoming this lies in your own personal power. I had an enormous help from my family, but in the end it all comes down to how much you push yourself out there. How much you look fear into the eyes and assertively walk towards it showing it that even though you are small, you have courage and power to choose your own fate. However, knowing that you are not alone, and you have people supporting you is of an ENORMOUS help indeed.

That’s why I am sharing the story of this brave woman so the world becomes a little more open about these kind of mental illnesses. Just saying “you got this buddy” to a person struggling with panic attacks can be a game changer.
