The Dr. Dolores Show: 5 Ways How to Shift From Self Criticism

Self criticism often stems from deep rooted beliefs and past experiences, but it doesn’t have to define you.

By embracing self compassion, you can boost your confidence, reduce stress, and cultivate a sense of inner peace.

Here are 5 powerful ways to shift from self criticism to self compassion and raise your frequency in the process…

1. Catch the Critic and Choose Again

The first step is awareness.

Notice when your inner dialogue becomes judgmental or harsh.

These moments often come with “bumps”, moments of discomfort, shame, or inner tension.

Instead of spiraling into self blame, pause.

Take a breath.

And remind yourself:

👉 “I could choose to go down that path… or I could choose differently.”

Even this small interruption breaks the old cycle and opens a new one based on choice and awareness.

2. Speak to Yourself Like You’d Speak to a Friend

Would you tell your best friend they’re not enough?

That they’ve failed again?

Of course not.

So why do we speak to ourselves that way?

According to Dr. Fazzino, healing starts with offering yourself the same kindness you naturally give to others.

Ask yourself:

👉 “What would I say to someone I love if they felt this way?”

Then say those words to you.

Because you love yourself.

This instantly shifts your frequency and calms your nervous system.

3. Understand Where the Voice Comes From

Negative self talk doesn’t just appear, it’s learned.

For many of us, perfectionism and inner criticism were survival mechanisms in childhood.

They were ways to stay safe, earn love, or avoid punishment.

Recognizing this is liberating.

👉 You’re not broken, you were conditioned.

And once you realize that your brain doesn’t know the difference between internal and external criticism, you understand how damaging self talk really is.

The solution?

Replace control with compassion.

That’s what your inner self truly needs.

4. Practice “Gratitude for Me” Journaling

Want a daily practice to rewire your brain for self compassion?

Start a journal focused only on what you appreciate about yourself.

This isn’t about ego, it’s about emotional hygiene.

👉 Write down one thing each day that you’re grateful for about you:

  1. “I stayed calm in a tough moment.”
  2. “I asked for help today.”
  3. “I gave myself rest.”

This (RE)trains your subconscious to focus on worthiness, not lack.

5. Remember: You’re Healing Generations

No one’s parents were perfect.

Most of us were raised by people doing the best they could with the tools they had.

Much of our shame was projected onto us, not created by us.

But healing is nonlinear.

👉 Time, as Dr. Fazzino reminds us, is not truly linear, it’s all happening at once.

That means the compassion you offer yourself now can ripple into the past and future.

Every time you choose kindness over critique, you’re not just healing your present, you’re healing your lineage.

If you’re ready to break free from the weight of self judgment and step into a more compassionate relationship with yourself, this episode is for you.

Tune in and discover how small but intentional changes can empower you to rewrite your inner narrative, because you deserve to speak to yourself with the same love and understanding you give to others…
