10 Rules for Being Human | Rule 4: A lesson is repeated until learned

“A lesson is repeated until learned. A lesson will be presented to you in various forms until you have learned it. when you have learned it, you can then go on to the next lesson.” — Dr. Cherie Carter Scott

Have you ever felt like you’re stuck in a loop?

Maybe you keep attracting the same kind of frustrating relationship, struggling with a particular skill, or encountering similar roadblocks in your career.

It’s enough to make you want to throw your hands up and scream, “Isn’t it obvious I haven’t learned this lesson yet?!”

Well, my friends, there’s a reason these experiences keep popping up.

It’s not some cosmic punishment for past mistakes (although it might feel that way sometimes!).

According to Rule #4 by Dr. Cherie…

Rule 4: A lesson is repeated until learned

10-rules-for-being-human-rule-4

Dr. Cherie’s NEW book “Life IS a Game” dives deep into each of the 10 rules for being human, all explored by her own real life experience.

She dedicated her life following these rules and now, at the age of 75 she reveals the lessons that she learned by following the “10 Rules for Being Human” for over 50 years.

But what’s with this 4th rule?

Well, think of it like this… Imagine yourself learning a new dance move.

At first, you stumble, step on your toes, and look more like a baby giraffe learning to walk than a graceful dancer.

But with each repetition, your body absorbs the information.

You refine your movements, gain confidence, and eventually, you’re waltzing like a pro.

Life’s lessons work the same way.

Sometimes, the initial attempt isn’t enough for true mastery.

The Universe, in its infinite wisdom, may present the lesson in a slightly different form, a different relationship, a new challenge at work.. to give you another chance to integrate the knowledge.

Here’s how you can use this rule to your advantage…

4 Steps to Finally Learn The Lesson:

Step 1. Identify the recurring theme.

Is there a specific area of your life where you keep facing similar challenges?

Finances? Relationships? Career choices (same boss, different clothes)?

Perhaps you find yourself constantly overspending, ending up in relationships with emotionally unavailable partners, or applying for jobs that are not a match.

Recognizing the pattern is the first step to breaking it.

Journaling about your experiences or talking to a trusted friend, therapist, or coach can help you identify these recurring themes.

Step 2. Embrace introspection.

Once you’ve identified the theme, take some time for honest reflection.

What might this lesson be trying to teach you?

Here are some prompts to get you started:

Are there any limiting beliefs holding me back?

For example, if you keep struggling with finances, maybe you have a belief around scarcity or not being deserving of abundance.

What is my role in perpetuating this pattern? Are there any unconscious habits or behaviors that contribute to the challenge?

For instance, if you keep attracting unavailable partners, are you settling for crumbs of affection, or failing to communicate your needs clearly?

What would a more empowered version of me do in this situation?

Step 3. Commit to learning and growth.

Sometimes, a simple shift in perspective can unlock a whole new level of understanding.

Are you approaching the situation with a fixed mindset, believing your abilities are set in stone? Or are you approaching it with curiosity wanting to learn the lesson and grow?

The first one is called “fixed mindset”.

Instead, cultivate a “growth mindset”, where you are curious like a child, where you believe you can learn and improve through effort.

People with a growth mindset see challenges as opportunities to develop their skills and knowledge.

They’re not afraid to step outside their comfort zone, embrace mistakes as learning experiences, and seek out feedback to help them improve.

People fail to learn the lesson over and over again for 2 reasons… either because they are oblivious to the lesson or they are scared to grow.

Here are some ways to cultivate a growth mindset…

1. Focus on the process, not just the outcome.

Instead of getting discouraged by setbacks, celebrate your small wins and focus on the effort you’re putting in.

2. Challenge negative self talk.

When that inner critic whispers doubt, replace those thoughts with empowering affirmations.

For example, instead of saying “I’m not good at this,” tell yourself “This is challenging, but I’m learning and growing every day.”

3. Embrace the power of “yet.”

When faced with a difficulty, add the word “yet” to the end of your self talk.

For instance, “I can’t do this task perfectly yet,” or “I haven’t mastered this skill yet, but I’m getting better every day.”

This small shift in language acknowledges the current state while holding space for future growth.

Step 4. Take action!

Knowledge without action is like a delicious recipe gathering dust on a shelf.

Once you have a clearer understanding of the lesson, take a courageous step forward.

Try a new approach, seek out guidance, or enroll in a class.

Remember, even small steps in the right direction can lead to big breakthroughs.

Sometimes, something as “small” as letting go of a trigger with a deep breath can change your whole reality.

Life isn’t about getting everything perfect the first time…

It’s about the journey of learning and evolving.

So, the next time you feel stuck in a loop, don’t get discouraged.

See it as an opportunity to delve deeper, gain a new perspective, and finally master that life lesson.

Remember, my friends, you are capable of incredible growth.

Embrace the repetition, and watch yourself transform!
