First of all, how are you and your family doing in these “crazy” times?

Thankfully, we are doing very well.

Like many families, we have had our challenges over the years, but one thing recovery has taught me is the importance of gratitude, resilience, and staying connected to the people who matter most.

My wife Denise and our children Cobhaí and Radha are my greatest motivation, and family remains at the centre of everything I do.

How did the coronavirus pandemic affect your clients? Did it affect you at all?

The pandemic highlighted something many of us already knew, isolation can be incredibly damaging to mental health and recovery.

Many clients experienced increased anxiety, loneliness, uncertainty, and a loss of routine.

For individuals struggling with addiction, the lack of connection and support was particularly challenging.

Professionally, it required adapting quickly to online support, virtual groups, and remote coaching.

Personally, it reinforced the importance of connection, family, community, and maintaining healthy routines during difficult times.

The Origin:

Tell us about you, your career, how you started with your coaching career?

My journey into coaching and counselling began through my own lived experience.

For many years I struggled with addiction, including alcohol, drugs, and gambling.

Recovery changed my life, but what impacted me most was discovering that genuine change happens when people feel understood rather than judged.

Over the last two decades I have worked in addiction and recovery services in a variety of roles including addiction counsellor, psychotherapist, group facilitator, recovery support coordinator, and private therapist.

Alongside my professional qualifications, I bring something equally valuable, lived experience.

Today, I help people overcome addiction, rebuild their lives, improve their mental wellbeing, and discover their own capacity for growth through my work with Empowerment & Elevation.com.

What was your biggest obstacle that you had to overcome in your life that made you who you are today?

Without question, addiction.

Addiction affected every area of my life and brought me to some very dark places.

However, recovery taught me lessons I could never have learned any other way.

It taught me humility, resilience, accountability, gratitude, and purpose.

The obstacle that nearly destroyed me became the foundation for helping others.

What are the biggest lessons that you learned overcoming your greatest obstacle?

The first lesson is that acceptance must come before change.

The second lesson is that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

The third lesson is that lasting change is built through consistent small actions rather than dramatic transformations.

Finally, I learned that our past does not define our future.

The Coaching Style:

How do you innovate with coaching your clients?

I believe people are more than their problems.

Rather than focusing solely on what needs fixing, I focus on identifying strengths, opportunities, values, and possibilities.

One of the innovations I have developed is the Empowerment Pathway, a practical framework that helps people move from awareness to action through small, achievable steps.

I use a blend of evidence based approaches, lived experience, coaching principles, counselling skills, and practical exercises that clients can apply immediately in their everyday lives.

My focus is on progress rather than perfection.

What’s unique about your coaching approach?

My approach combines professional expertise with lived experience.

Clients know they are speaking with someone who understands both the theory and the reality of change.

I take a practical, honest, and non judgemental approach.

I also focus heavily on empowerment.

Rather than creating dependency on a coach, I aim to help people develop the skills, confidence, and self belief to become their own best coach.

What benefits do your clients get after working with you?

  1. Clients often report increased confidence and self belief.
  2. They experience better emotional regulation.
  3. They develop improved relationships.
  4. They gain greater clarity and purpose.
  5. They reduce harmful behaviours.
  6. They build increased resilience.
  7. They strengthen recovery and relapse prevention skills.
  8. They improve physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing.
  9. Most importantly, they begin to believe that change is possible.

Do you use any specific tools to be efficient with your clients?

I use a combination of evidence based tools including motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioural approaches, mindfulness, strengths based coaching, structured recovery planning, journaling exercises, behavioural tracking, and practical action plans.

I have also developed a range of workbooks, assessments, and personal development resources through Empowerment & Elevation to help clients continue their growth between sessions.

The Impact:

If you had a super megaphone that, when you speak into, the whole world will hear your message, what would you say?

No matter what has happened in your life, you are not finished yet.

Your mistakes do not define you.

Your struggles do not define you.

Your past does not define you.

There is always another chapter waiting to be written, and you have more strength than you realise.

What is the greatest lesson you have learned in your life?

The greatest lesson I have learned is that every person has value, regardless of where they are today.

People are not broken.

Often, they are carrying pain, fear, shame, or experiences they have never fully processed.

When we create an environment of compassion, accountability, and hope, remarkable things can happen.

Your final thoughts?

The world needs more hope.

With everything going on in the world I believe people are getting disillusioned.

Every day I meet people who believe they are beyond help, and every day I see people achieve things they never thought possible.

Change rarely happens overnight, but with support, commitment, and belief, transformation is available to all of us.

My mission is simple, help people realise they are capable of far more than they currently believe.
